Orthodontics/Invisalign

Dr Peter Ikonomou has been providing the following full range of orthodontic options for our patients since 2005. These include:

  • Appliances (or plates)
  • Braces
  • Invisalign

Each has its place in modern practice of dentistry. In some cases a combination of these approaches is needed.

Appliances (or plates)

Appliances can often be used to intercept and correct a range of orthodontic problems. This is why they are more often used on children. An appliance can use growth to improve development to provide the best orthodontic result.

Examples of this kind of orthodontic treatment may include:

  • Correction of thumb and finger sucking habits
  • Moving teeth that are in cross-bite
  • Expanding narrow upper arches of teeth

Braces

For a wide range of orthodontic problems, braces still offer the best way to straighten teeth. For most younger patients and teens they are the most reliable form of treatment.

You probably know what traditional metal braces are and what they look like. But, did you know that there are better looking alternatives? Ask us today about tooth-coloured ceramic braces!

Invisalign

Invisalign is a system that uses clear, removable aligners to straighten your teeth.

A series of aligners is made with 3D computer imaging technology. They have been proven effective and have the added advantage of being nearly invisible so it is not obvious that you are wearing them. They are also:

  • Comfortable
  • Clear
  • Completely removable
  • Increasingly popular, especially among adults

How they work

You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush or floss.

As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week — until they have straightened to their final positions.

Invisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan on the computer before you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.

Is Invisalign suitable for everyone?

Each person is an individual, and after a consultation, x-rays and some impressions of your teeth, we will be able to advise you on what is best for you. Apart from Dr Ikonomou, other members of the team also provide a more limited range of orthodontics.

We also refer some of the most complex cases to specialist orthodontists.
