In December, 2014 Dr Power travelled to California to learn the in and outs of gum rejuvenation. Dr Chao in Los Angeles has been performing this revolutionary technique on patients with remarkable success since 2010.
Up to 50% of adults have some gum recession and in many cases it is quite unsightly and quite painful – the exposed roots of the teeth being exquisitely sensitive in some people. Traditional surgery has been quite painful (requiring transplanting gum form the palate onto the exposed root surface) and has met with varying success rates. Dr Chao’s technique is a “Pinhole” approach and is much less invasive, much less painful, with much lower recovery time. Dr Power was so impressed with the concept that he made the journey with his family in tow and had a look around Hollywood and Disneyland at the same time. The method results in the gum being released gently from a small pinhole at the top of the gum above the roots of the teeth and moved down all together to cover the exposed roots. The outcome is that the gum covers the previously exposed roots, resulting in a more comfortable, youthful and healthier smile.
