At Power Dental Practice, we recognise that a visit to the dentist can be daunting for some. Understanding this concern, we have been offering sedation dentistry for over 30 years. It is a compassionate approach that can ease dental anxiety, providing a more relaxed and comfortable experience.
Understanding Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry employs medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It's sometimes referred to as "sleep dentistry," although that's not entirely accurate, as patients are usually awake, except for those who are under a full general anaesthesia in an operating theatre. However, almost everyone who has sedation does not remember it, which is why it is the common method used when patients undergo Gastroscopies or Colonoscopies.
The Types of Sedation Used at Power Dental
At Power Dental Practice, we tailor the sedation level to the individual needs of our patients, ensuring comfort and safety throughout the procedure.
For minor cases, we may prescribe (or ask your GP to prescribe) a drug to help relax you (like a Valium Tablet)and have you take that before your appointment. This is enough for some people.
However, we more often recommend an intra-venous sedation (where a needle is put in your arm and drugs given that way) as it is more reliable. We always have a medically-qualified sedationist (a medical doctor) give any Intra-Venous sedation and look after the patient while we do the dental work. Recovery is easier and quicker from sedation than a full general anaesthetic.
Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?
Sedation is often helpful for:
- Patients with a low pain threshold.
- Those who are undergoing an unpleasant procedure (like Wisdom Teeth removal)
- Those who find it difficult to sit still in the dentist's chair.
- Patients with a significant amount of dental work to be completed.
- Individuals who have a fear of dental visits.
- People who have a sensitive "gag" reflex and find it difficult to tolerate hands and instruments in their mouth while fully awake.
- Those who are afraid of needles in the mouth.
We conduct a thorough evaluation, including a review of your medical history, before recommending sedation, ensuring it's an appropriate option for your situation. Children, those suffering from Dementia and some forms of Autism are generally not good candidates for sedation - they often need a full general anaesthetic in an operating theatre. We can help arranging that, too.
Our Approach to Patient Care
Our philosophy at Power Dental Practice is centred around patient-centred dentistry. We value long-term relationships with our patients, and part of that is understanding and responding to your needs. Sedation dentistry is one way we can make your dental experience better. Our sedation doctor will be in touch with you in the days before the procedure to double-check your suitability and explain it to you, and answer any questions you may have. The doctor will explain to you how long you will have to fast for before you come in for your sedation dentistry.
Aftercare and Recovery
Post-procedure care is critical for sedation dentistry. Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and support. Recovery times vary depending on the type of sedation used, but we'll be with you every step of the way until you're ready to go about your day. Most importantly, you must be accompanied home after the procedure and not drive a vehicle or operate machinery for 24 hours afterwards.

This blog post is intended to inform and not to advise. Sedation dentistry may not be suitable for everyone, and a personal consultation is necessary to determine if this treatment aligns with your health needs. Always seek the guidance of a professional for any health-related questions or concerns.
